President’s grant to post-graduate student sedov

Viktor Sedov, a post-graduate student of the Maritime State University was rewarded with a RF President’s grant for outstanding abilities in studies and research. He graduated from our University in 2001 and became a post-graduate student at the Physics Department, specializing in radio physics. He published 14 papers and won a lot of diplomas and awards .

V.I.Sedykh’s press conference

Following “Vostok Media” information on non-payment of DA to participants of the round-the-world voyage aboard the Nadezhda, V.I.Sedykh, MSU Rector, held a press conference where he explained the situation be alterations made in the Russian currency legislation which forbid payment of foreign currency instead of DA. He offered the Nadezhda people two ways out and asked them to make a decision which way they wanted the MSU to follow. He regretted the inconveniences they were experiencing as result of the alteration in the currency legislation.

On 11 December a meeting of the Council of Rectors of the Far Eastern Higher Education Establishments was held in Khabarovsk. V.I.Sedykh, Rector of the Maritime State University also took part in it.

Children are given special attention

On 11 December students of the Psychological Faculty, the Maritime State University met with children from the Primorski Regional Socio-Rehabilitation Centre. The children brought hand-made articles: embroidery, drawings, toys and cookies. The students and teachers bought the children’s works at a charitable fair. The proceeds will be used to buy New Year’s presents for the children.

After the fair a tea party was held which ended with interesting games.

The Nadezhda covered 30 thousand miles

Today, on 07 December at 16:25 ship’s time the Nadezhda covered 30 thousand miles. At least 14 thousand miles are ahead. Thus, she completed 2/3 of her route.

The univesity seeking talents

A competition of amateur performers is being held in the Maritime State University on 1-4 December. It is traditionally held in December. Those selected for the send tour will take part in the concert on 10 December. The laureates of the competition will take part in the concert in honor of the 60th anniversary of higher marine education to be celebrated on 5 March, 2004.

The Nadezhda passed cape horn without problems

As the wind velocity did not exceed 10 m/sec, it made it possible to pass the longitude of the Cape Horn under all the sails. It is of principal importance for the observers from the Yachting Federation. The Nadezhda entered the Pacific Ocean in full compliance with the schedule.

Concert of classical music in MSU

The Maritime University and the Pacific Symphonic Orchestra continue their cooperation under the contract on concert activities for this academic year. Yesterday, on 27 November classical music sounded at the University again. The cadets, students and teachers gathered in the hall to listen to overtures to operas “Ruslan and Lyumila” by M.Glinka and “Traviata” by J.Verdi, “Simple Symphony” by B.Britten, extracts from J.Bizet’s operas and G.Sviridov’s “Snowstorm”.

Proiblems of safe shipping

On 25 November a Seminar “Matters of Carrying out Provisions of Chapter XI-2 of the SOLAS Convention and the International Code on Safety of Ships and Port Facilities in the Far East” was held in the Maritime State University. Growth of terrorism in the world is a present-day fact, this is why it is necessary to work out preventive measures to protect human lives, which is required by the international documents mentioned in the Seminar name. Its objective is to identify practical ways of implementing the provisions of those documents.

Governor’s grant given to the best ones

On 25 November students and post-graduate students received Primorski Governor’s grants for 2003-2004 academic year. The Maritime State University named after admiral G.I.Nevelskoy was represented by Mikhail Uvarov, a fifth-year cadet of the Marine Engineering Department and three young teachers, working at their theses: Elvira Zelenina, Victor Sedov and Roman Drozdov.

During 2003 the Far Eastern Regional Scientific Youth Festival “Science and Youth’s Contribution to Maritime Sector Development was held in the Maritime State University under the auspices of the Primorski Regional Administration. It included competitions in English, in essays in English, in research papers in psychology and many others.

The Youth Festival promotes development of science in the Maritime Territory.

New book project is five years old

The Popular Publishing Program “New Book” marked its 5 years of existence. Fifty books were published during those years. The Program is non-profitable, designed to help the authors who have no finances to publish their works.

On 14 November, 2003 a literary-musical party was held in the Pushkin Theatre, devoted to the fifth-year anniversary of the Program.

On October 31, 2003 a Regional Youth Forum was held in the MSU. Its objective was to make students and administration of Primorski Universities more active in using really working programs of addictive conduct prevention, spread of HIV infection, AIDS and drug abuse. The Forum was arranged by the Department of Education and Science with Primorski Regional Administration, the Maritime State University named after Admiral G.I.Nevelskoy, Rotary Club “Vladivostok-Centre”, the Regional AIDS Clinic Centre and Vladivostok Youth Organization “Life”.

Studies for an open form of education started in the Open Maritime University. On October 11, 35 students got their examination books and student’s books. The Executive Secretary of the MSU Admission Commission A.D.Yuzov handed them. It is the first enrollment in our University.

Live music

A recently opened musical subscription “The Pacific Symphony Orchestra Invites” implied meetings with those who love music in the concert halls of Vladivostok. But yesterday, on October 2 the best-known musical collective of our city came to the Maritime State University named after Admiral G.I.Nevelskoy in full to play for the cadets, students and teachers. In the Assembly Hall, where, according to the performers, acoustics is excellent, classical music sounded.

“Nadezhda”s long miles

We would remind that at present the “Nadezhda” is taking part in the final stage of the Cutty Sark Regatta held in the Baltic. The first leg of the Race was held along the Gdynia (Poland) - Turku (Finland) route from 22 - 28 July, 2003. In all about one hundred tall ships from more than 20 countries took part in it, the first leg result for the “Nadezhda” was the fifth place in her class.

Maritime university ship modelists won gold!

The team from the Maritime State University named after admiral G.I.Nevelskoy won 4 golden and 3 silver medals and took the first place at the European Championship in Ship Modeling held in Bulgaria on August 3-6. The team comprised Vladislav and Galina Subbotins, Maxim Gayek and Anton Kislov. The 12-year-old schoolboy from Vladivostok Anton Kislov competing in the youths’ category set a new world record. His cord model of A-3 class developed an unbelievable speed of 212 km per hour.

200 YEARS LATER

On August 7,2003 200 passed since the first round-the-world voyage was made by the sailing sloops ’Nadezhda’ and ’Neva’ whose commanders were Ivan Kruzenshtern and Fyodor Lisyansky. The voyage was completed in August 1806. Kronstadt was the initial and final point of their route. On January 25, 2003 the training sailcraft owned by the Admiral Nevelskoy MSU with the navigating cadets on board set out for her round-the-world expedition following the ’Nadezhda’ and ’Neva’ route. Having passed part of her route the modern ’Nadezhda’ anchored in St.Petersburg, where the crew and cadets were relieved. At present the ship is taking part in the International Tall Ships Race ’Cutty Sark-2003’.

Maritime university yacht brought cup from Nakhodka

During the last weekend a traditional sailing regatta was held in Nakhodka. It was organized by the Nakhodka Oceanic Club. Fifteen yachts from Vladivostok and Nakhodka took part in the race. The main prize - the Nakhodka Mayor’s Cup - was won by the yacht ’Pulsar’ owned by Admiral Nevelskoy Maritime State University and her master Yuri Sayapin, the second place was taken by the ’Commodore Bering’ yacht (sailing master Vladimir Gamanov), also owned by the MSU, the ’Captain Panayev’ from Nakhodka was the third one.

Sailing sport in the Maritime university

Russian sailing sport is over two centuries. It originated in St.Petersburg and Odessa and in late 90-s of the 19th century came to Vladivostok. The MSU Yacht Club is well-known far beyond the boundaries of the Maritime Territory. Sailing sportin the Maritime University is over 30. Our yachts the ’Rodina’, ’Rossiya’, ’Chukotka’, ’Commodore Bering’, ’Admiral Nevelskoy’, ’ Pulsar’, ’DVVIMU-1’ and ’DVVIMU-2’ and others covered hundreds of thousands of miles and took part in scores of tall ship races.

For 22 years a popular Admiral Nevelskoy Cup Regatta is held in the Amur Bay. The main prize - the challenge cup - is made to design of the world-known seafarer, the then ’Chukotka’ yacht crew member Fyodor Konyukhov.

Zhukov’s parting with young seafarers’ school

For many years the Young Seafarers’ School has been functioning with the Admiral Nevelskoy MSU. Since 1999 it is called the Children’s and Youth’s Sports School ’Seafarer’ functioning all the year round. The main purpose of its activity was to let schoolchildren learn about seamanship, acquire its elements and habits of aquatic sports. The school is in fact the first step in continuous maritime education at the University.

Psychology faculty of the Maritime university is 10

On July 11 the Humanities Institute of the Maritime State University is having a holiday. The Faculty of Psychology is 10 years old. Opened in 1993, the Faculty of Psychology became the second one in Primorski higher education institutions after the FENU. The name of its first dean Eduard I. Kirshbaum was well known in Vladivostok.

Cadets’ swap aboard the “Nadezhda”

The cadets’ swap took place on board the sailing ship “Nadezhda” making her round-the-world voyage. The second-year engineer cadets arrived by air to St.Petersburg, where the “Nadezhda” is lying’, while Vladivostok met 90 third-year navigating cadets. The latter took part in the first stage of the voyage (Vladivostok - St.Petersburg). They were away from home during five months. They covered 15190 miles, three oceans and called at six foreign ports.

Two captains’s life stories in one family album

The “Svetlana” Publishing House issues an album “The 20th Century is the Age of the Captains Pudovkin’s Dynasty”. The album shows a small part of the Far Eastern merchant fleet history through the life stories of two seafarers, Pudovkin Sr. and Pudovkin Jr., whose careers embraced nearly all the 20th century. It also shows part of the Maritime University history, since Yuri A.Pudovkin, the famous shipmaster Alexandr G.Pudovkin’s son and shipmaster too is an alumnus of our University. He graduated from it in 1952.

Reception in honor of excellent cadets and students

On May 30 V.I. Sedykh, the MSU Rector, gave a reception in honor of the University excellent cadets and students. Dressed for this occasion and excited a little those who can be called the pride of the University get together in the banquet hall. The event has become a tradition. This get-together of the MSU leader with the cadets and students enable them to learn each other better.

Maritime universities are friends

The Maritime State University named after admiral G.I. Nevelskoi is receiving guests again. The training ship “Hannara” is arriving on June 1. It is her first visit to our town. Besides the crewmembers there are 70 cadets and teachers of the Korean Maritime University.

A new book issued by the MSU publishing house

The MSU Publishing House published a new book, a collection of poems written by children and teenagers. Its name is symbolic: “Happy birthday to you, the morning!” the verses created by the young authors were collected in one book because the authors are scholarship and prize winners and participants of the “New Names” Program undertaken by the Maritime State University named after admiral G.I. Nevelskoi supported by the Primorski Regional Culture Department and the Primorski Culture Fund. The young poets come from Nakhodka, Dalnerechensk, Lesozavodsk, Vladivostok, Fokino, The Oktyabrsky and Kavalerovsky Counties. In all they are 16.

Sensei Hirai Sumiteru’s visit to MSU

On May 14 Mr. Hirai Sumiteru, Sensei of the seventh dan in Korindo Aikido from Japan, visited the Maritime State University named after admiral G.I.Nevelskoi. It is the first visit by the esteemed Sensei to Russia. Mr. Hirai Sumiteru demonstrated and commented on general movements characteristic of his style, answered questions, told about the background of his school, its peculiarities and specifics differing it from other schools and also his plans for the future.

On May 14 the 47th Open Regatta of the MSU named after G.I.Nevelskoi starts in the Amurski Bay. It is an annual event, this time dedicated to the 58th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

On May 6 the sailing vessel “Nadezhda” owned by the Maritime State University called at the port of Gdansk. We would remind you that the sailing vessel has been making the round the world voyage for three months (she left Vladivostok on January 25). For this period she has passed ten seas, the Pacific and Indian Oceans, eight foreign ports.

During it’s voyage “Nadezhda” will cross three oceans, call at twenty ports of all the world, take part in celebrations in honor of 300th anniversary of Saint- Petersburg and in different regattas and races.
