News for october, 2005 October 31, 2005Initiation of new cadets Last Saturday the MSU had one of its main festivals. Our University greeted 284 new cadets. Press Service of the Maritime State University | more |   October 31, 2005Training for a japanese company The Maritime State University is becoming an international center of training specialists for merchant marine of not only Russia, but also other countries. Of late the MOL, the shipping company from Japan signed an agreement with the MSU on training seafarers to work aboard its ships. The MOL is one of the leading companies engaged in sea transportation; it is the world biggest holding owning 650 ships of different type and purpose. The Company is planning to increase the number of its ships to 1,000 in the near future. Their crews need highly qualified officers. The MOL leadership is aware of a high level of officers’ training at the Maritime State University - its graduates selected by the Russian Company FES-Contract are working on board Japanese ships.
Press Service of the Maritime State University | more |   October 25, 2005Initiation at the MSU marine college. 2005 On the previous day a cyclone raged over the town. On the Initiation Day the weather was not welcoming either. It kind of warned would-be seamen: their trade will require courage, self-control, acquired toughness and good health. Despite the low temperature in the Assembly Hall, the feeling of solemnity did not leave those present. The Hall was full of students, their parents, guests and teachers. The University banner was brought in to the sounds of the Maritime University hymn. After a solemn oath a command was given, "Put on jacks, a symbol of marine glory!" On 23-25 September in Settlement Lozovy at the Primorsky Regional Championship in 500-meters distance the team of the Maritime State University occupied the second place.
Press Service of the Maritime State University | more |   October 20, 2005The far eastern "Printing house" On 19 October the Far Eastern Book Exhibition-cum-Fair "Printing House - 2005" opened at the Primorye-EXPO building. The participants were greeted by G.P.Turmov, Deputy of the Primorsky Regional Legislature. Despite the fact that the Far Eastern territories are separated by great distances, traditionally, representatives of the Magadan, Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Khabarovsk Regions and the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) gather in Vladivostok. Primorsky Krai, as usual, is represented by Vladivostok, Ussuriysk and Nakhodka. It was organized by the Association of Pacific Region Universities (APRU). The working language of the Conference is English only. The FENU Rector V.I.Kurilov became a chairman of the Organizing Committee, the First Vice-Rector B.L.Reznik and APRU Project Director Zita Venzel (South University, California) were co-chairpersons.

The MSU is a big institution, therefore, the territory to be cleaned by cadets, students and the University staff is big too. Every department was allotted a certain plot.

As usual, representative teams comprising full-time freshmen of all the Institutes and Faculties of our University were admitted to the competitions. The "Meridian" Newspaper correspondent | more |   October 14, 2005Victory in kick-boxingThe "Olympiyets" Sports Complex hosted an Open Championship of the city in kick-boxing. The Maritime University was represented by two cadets: Stanislav Grabchuk, Company 25, Marine Engineering Faculty and Maxim Otto, Marine College. They met in the final fight for those weighing up to 63.5 kg. Stanislav Grabchuk won a very intensive fight and took the first place.

Cadet, Company 23   October 10, 2005Marine ecology - 2005 On 5 - 7 October the Maritime State University hosted the 3rd International Research and Practical Conference "Marine Ecology - 2005" and the International Specialized Exhibition "Equipment and Technologies of Responding to Emergency Oil Spills, Fire Fighting Means for Objects". As you can understand, such large-scale events are devoted to problems and ways of protecting the sea and coastline environment from technology-caused accidents. Press Service of the Maritime State University | more |   October 10, 2005Meeting the 115th anniversary of marine education in the russian far eastApproaching of the important date coincided with completion of the first issue of a humanitarian and social-scientific series "Bulletin of the Maritime State University named after Admiral G.I.Nevelskoy". It will be published on the days of the jubilee. Once again the Maritime State University shows an indissoluble connection of maritime higher education and fundamental studies whose unity serves as a proof of fruitful realization of a university mission in modern conditions. Deadline of submitting materials to another issue of the Bulletin of the MSU named after adm. G.I.Nevelskoy is 12 May, 2006.
| more |   October 4, 2005"Old town" remembers about its residents For a number of years a historical club "Old Town" has been functioning with the Department of History and Political Science. Not long ago there was a meeting with an interesting person, war veteran Nina Afanasyevna Varyagova. It may have been one of the most touching sittings.

Some days ago within the framework of the Vladivostok Art Festival "Ikebana-2005" timed to the 150th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Russia and Japan, an exhibition was held and an origami workshop was held in the MSU Institute of Eastern Asia. Its theme sounded like the Festival motto: "The way of a flower is a new birth in master’s hands". The workshop was conducted by IEA teacher and volunteer from Toyama prefecture Ms.Makadzima Kadzuko and origami teacher of the MSU School-Studio M.I.Semyonova.

Such major events are devoted to problems and ways of protecting the sea and littoral environment from technology-caused accidents. It is only too logical that our town and the MSU Institute of Sea Protection became its venue: a research on ways of containing aftermath of pollution of the Far Eastern seas is being done here.
