The Institute of Sea Protection was established on December 1, 2001 on the base of the Center on Assessing and Preventing Aftermath of Technology-Caused Processes. As a subdivision of the University the Institute is engaged in education and research activities.

Objectives of the Institute of Sea Protection:

  • to investigate protection of sea water areas and shoreland against oil pollution;
  • to train personnel in oil spills response at sea;
  • to work out and serve information systems of protecting sea against oil spills;
  • to train and re-train specialists in combating emergency oil spills according to programs of additional specialized education based on international and Russian standards;
  • to introduce and use modern software for the system of marine environment protection;
  • to issue and distribute printed matter, information and other materials;
  • to organize and hold seminars, conferences and exhibitions.

Cooperation with subdivisions of the Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Science, higher education institutions and public organizations of the region is one of the Institute's top priorities.

Research and practical workshops and conferences on problems of marine environment protection against oil pollution are regularly held at the Institute, modern state and prospects of developing satellite navigation cartography systems are being studied, modern information technologies are being introduced and problems of ecology of the Far Eastern seas are being investigated here.

The Institute staff comprises people committed to protection of the sea against anthropogenic intervention. A lot of staff members have got experience in combating oil spills, are being trained in the US (SABIT) and are taking part in relevant drills in Sakhalin.
