210 years since the birth of Gennady Nevelskoy

Today, December 5, 2023, marks the 210th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Russian navigator Gennady Nevelskoy.

G.I. Nevelskoy went down in history as a researcher who proved the island position of Sakhalin and the accessibility of the Amur River from the sea for seagoing vessels. These discoveries laid the foundation for the systematic study and development of the Amur and Primorye regions. Leading the Amur expedition, Nevelskoy actually secured the Amur region and Sakhalin for Russia and laid the foundation for annexing the territory of Primorye to it. Through the labors of the expedition, military posts were founded, which later became the towns of Nikolaevsk-on-Amur, Sovetskaya Harbor, Korsakov, and Mariinsk. Nevelskoy`s associates also fulfilled his dream - in 1860 the post of Vladivostok was founded, which became a stronghold for consolidating Russian influence in the Far East. The richest regions became a vital part of Russia.

Grateful descendants honor his memory. Today, eight geographical objects are named after Nevelskoy. The first monument in Vladivostok, built back in 1897 on the initiative and with funds raised by the townspeople, was a monument to Nevelskoy.

Today, December 5, at 11.30, a solemn event dedicated to the 210th anniversary of the birth of Gennady Nevelskoy will take place at the monument to Admiral G.I. Nevelskoy.
